Too many laws, too many prisoners (Economist)
Short summary: Our criminal system is messed up and expensive. A lot of laws are ambiguous or poorly written. Thinking of this from a semantic web and social perspective...
How about a standard ontology for laws, and a dataset of all laws based on it. Considering each country, state, jurisdiction have many similar laws, we're likely to see a lot of redundancy but also a lot of variation. Attached to these laws what if could attach statistics for:
- Expense of prosecution
- Likelihood of appeal
- Likelihood of appeal
- Average prison sentence
Anything that could be used to measure the effectiveness of the law.

Everything - http://www.voidtools.com/download.php
Amazing search tool for finding anything on your computer. Filter's files/folders as you type. Installation is less than 1MB. Much faster than Window's search, less invasive than Google Desktop.

Incredibly helpful--I'm finding files I had forgotten about, and seeing all of the places that files get cached. On the other end, now it will be a lot easier for someone to find "John's deepest secrets.doc." Better rename that one just in case.

I want to blog more. I know blogging about blogging is cliché, but I love cliché, so perfect. I've tried this a few times before, but like everyone else, I just lose interest after a while. But I would like to get better at writing, and I figure this way (versus a personal journal) I may get some feedback.
Things I could write about:
1. Work. Experiences as a software engineer and government contractor.
2. Life as a 20-something in Arlington, VA. The bar scene, kickball, and being friends with a large and fun group of educated lushes.
3. Technology. I love my Droid; It's amazing all the stuff I can do with it. I would definitely consider a chip implant if it meant I would never have to carry a wallet around again.
4. ToastMasters. I'm in a club based at work. This has definitely spurred my desire to write more, so that I can better organize my thoughts.
5. Books. I've been using the public library a lot in the past few years, and I've found a lot of relatively obscure books that I think are worth a look
There's always going to be something to write about.
